MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic attachment and wireless charging system for compatible iPhone models. A magnetic case is a broader term for a phone case that uses magnets, but those magnets do not necessarily make it MagSafe-compatible. The difference is whether the case is designed to align with MagSafe accessories and support the features you want to use.
A MagSafe-compatible case has a built-in ring of magnets positioned to line up with the magnets in a compatible iPhone. This alignment helps attach compatible chargers, wallets, mounts, and other accessories in the intended position. Many such cases also allow wireless charging without removing the case, although charging performance depends on the phone, case, and charger.
Some products carry Apple’s MagSafe branding or certification, while others are described as MagSafe-compatible. Those descriptions are not interchangeable: compatibility indicates that an accessory is designed to work with the system, not necessarily that it is made or certified by Apple.
A magnetic case may contain magnets for a particular purpose, such as holding a flap closed or attaching to a car mount. Its magnets may be arranged differently from a MagSafe ring, so a MagSafe charger or wallet may not align or attach securely.
Some magnetic cases are also MagSafe-compatible. Look for an explicit compatibility statement rather than assuming that every case labeled “magnetic” will work with the entire range of MagSafe accessories.
Choose a MagSafe-compatible case if you regularly use a MagSafe charger, wallet, or mount and want a convenient magnetic connection. Choose another type of magnetic case if its features suit your routine and you do not need MagSafe accessory compatibility.
For either option, match the case to your exact iPhone model so the camera openings, buttons, and charging port fit properly. If you want a ring stand or lanyard, consider how you will carry and prop up your phone. A metal ring or attached accessory may interfere with wireless charging, so remove detachable accessories before charging when necessary.

Many compatible iPhones can charge wirelessly through a suitable case, but thick materials, metal components, or attached accessories can interfere. Remove a detachable ring or other accessory if it prevents the phone from sitting properly on the charger.
