The healthiest glass water bottle is a food-contact bottle made from durable glass, paired with a food-safe lid and seal that you can clean thoroughly. For most people, a borosilicate glass bottle with a wide opening, a protective sleeve, and a leak-resistant lid is a practical choice. Soda-lime glass can also work well when it is designed for drinking and cared for properly.
Glass does not need a plastic lining to hold water, and it does not retain flavors as readily as some materials. The healthiest choice, though, is the one you can keep clean and use without cracks or chips.
Choose a bottle intended for beverages, with a lid and any gasket made for food contact. A stainless steel lid with a silicone seal can limit the amount of plastic in contact with your water, although the exact construction varies. Look inside the cap as well as at its exterior.
A wide mouth makes it easier to reach the interior with a bottle brush. Removable seals are useful because moisture and residue can collect beneath them. If you prefer a straw lid, make sure you can clean the straw and its connection points.
Borosilicate glass is more resistant to thermal shock than ordinary soda-lime glass, making it a useful option if you alternate between cool and warm drinks. Even so, avoid sudden temperature extremes. A silicone sleeve can improve grip and offer some protection against everyday bumps, but it cannot make glass unbreakable.
Wash your bottle, lid, and seal regularly with warm, soapy water, then rinse and let the parts dry completely. Clean more promptly after adding juice, flavored drinks, or anything besides plain water. Follow the maker’s care instructions before putting any part in the dishwasher.
Inspect the rim and body for chips or cracks, and stop using a damaged bottle. For hot drinks, use only a bottle and lid intended for that temperature, and handle them carefully.
We recommend keeping soap dispensers and drinking bottles separate. A pump dispenser is designed for dispensing soap, not for drinking or carrying water. For sink organization, see our guide to a 500 ml glass soap dispenser.
Wash a frequently used water bottle daily with warm, soapy water, including the lid and seal. Clean it promptly after using it for flavored or sugary drinks, and let all parts dry completely.
